Well, Peter as usual is the first one to speak up. Several times over the years, Ive prayed that I could see an angel. The story takes place about eight days after the Confession of Peter (9:18-20), Jesus first passion prediction (9:21-22), and his admonitions about following him (9:23-27). It is possible to structure a sermon in such a way that it brings the hearer upon the scene, looking around at the various persons present. Should the preacher make God is transcendent. First Reading Commentary on Exodus 34:29-35 Moses countenance glows At the base of the mountain, they find themselves confronted by a great crowd and a distraught father who pleads for his son, who is possessed by a demon. Luke says, his clothing became white and dazzling Jesus went up the mountain to pray (9:29), perhaps to commune with God concerning his destiny. This future glory of Christ when he comes again to earth soon is displayed for a short time on this mountaintop experience. No sooner than he got down off the mountain, Jesus was met by a woman with a sick child, who begged for his mercy and healing kindness. As such the booths also symbolize a time of rest, which could be interpreted allegorically as the messianic rest. This has been a mountaintop experience but not the kind about which persons write glowingly of sunrises, soft breezes, warm friends, music, and quiet time. What do we do with this? The event takes place about eight days later (9:28), rather than after six (Mark 9:2; Matt 17:1); there appears to be no particular significance for the change. Throughout the scriptures, light is a symbol of God, so that whenever we come into the presence of God, were filled with the light of Gods love, and, like a prism, the radiance of God is reflected and refracted through us to illumine and enlighten others. At a time when anyone else would sit in stunned silence, Peter says, Lets make three tents! None of the Gospels tells us why he wants to build three tents: Perhaps he wants to prolong the mountaintop experienceto keep Jesus safe on the mountain rather than seeing him exposed to suffering, rejection, and death (v. 22). But who can adequately translate those "strong cryings and tears?" The event was a revelation of Christs glory and was witnessed by only three chosen apostles. At least 9 times that I could find in this Gospel. I write these lines just after hanging up the telephone. We cant deal with it. The glorified Christ in Luke 9 is a taste of the glorified Christ after the resurrection. To the world, Jesus was simply the son of Joseph. Moses had prophesied, Your God will raise up to you a prophet from the midst of you, of your brothers, like me. Later, after the resurrection, he will make it clear that his death was necessary so that he might enter into his glory (Luke 24:26). Luke describes Peter as not knowing what he said (v. 33). Its not like Moses had gotten his face onto the $1 bill or that Elijah had had his visage plastered all over the place in Israel the way we Americans do with Abraham Lincolns face. The story ends with the self-imposed silence (9:36), whereas in the parallels it is Jesus who commands the three disciples to be silent (Mark 9:9//Matthew 17:9). For all of us, let us seek to know the glory of God that we might experience the wonder and awe and fear of knowing him. 31 who appeared in glory and spoke of his departure, which he was about to accomplish at Jerusalem. Our bodies will be glorious. They have been on mountains to receive revelation; they are expected to appear at the coming of the messianic age (see Deuteronomy 18:15 concerning Moses; Malachi 4:5 concerning Elijah); and both had been taken into heaven and thereby were privileged to know God face-to-face and to know his will. Here Peter strikes out. At this point in Lukes story, Jesus and the disciples are on the way into the abyss of Jesus passion. God is not our Cosmic Buddy to whom we give the Bro handshake and hug. There is something so glorious about God and his kingdom that we will melt when confronted with it. The disciples were bewildered. This moment gave great assurance to all that the apostles spoke and lived for. But the disciples seem lost in a fog of cluelessness.
