You may have an injector connector that has come loose.A final note that I can't emphasize enough. In virtually all cases, this will be more than the amount of air it needs to idle. Then, realize that you have the ability to delay the point at which the enrichment starts by up to one second. Robust, feature-rich multi-port EFI systems offer easy plug-and-play late-model V8 engine swaps. If it cranks better then you know you're getting too much fuel. Most important!!! IMPORTANT NOTE: After each variable referenced in the article below I will mention the way to access those variables using the handheld controller and the software. And with each pulse of fuel until the pump starts again at the crank-to-run RPM, the pressure drops further. Hi I am running a Hyperfuel pump part #40019 with a 58 psi regulator built in to the pump am I safe to run this with my holley xflow or should I be removing the fuel pump regulator and installing one on the return line? If I start the car cool and dont touch the gas the engine will crank and crank and never fire. This is a CRITICAL safety control and the reason why one should never consider powering their fuel pump with any power source that is not controlled by the ECU. I call this the Happy Dance moment. If you don't show any fuel pressure then fix that. Copyright 2022 Holley Performance Products, Inc. All right reserved. I bet this fixes your problem. Beyond that you're going to have to get Holley tech support involved. Awesome Article. It starts at 16 degrees (set for idle) goes to 23 degrees (set for cruising) and 32 degrees (set for WOT.) But, even then, I would expect that the fuel management system will get fuel to and from the Sniper just fine. Do I still need the holley 12-753 30 amp relay. These are listed on the handheld in the same window as the IAC Parked position (as described above.) Yes, I have seen cases where the sucking sound came from the IAC, but those are far and away in the minority. Too much and it will simply idle high and can be manually adjusted down. Everyone else was backordered several months. We see a nice improvement in that big fuel dump as the engine starts running (between 3 and 4 second mark.) Don't change the prime shot percentage though. You can find that here. Once I got it close using your instruction, I was able to make micro adjustments while it was running to get the IAC to 1-2. Going Deeper: After you have some time to understand all of these different variables you might ask yourself as I did, "Why is there a separate table for cranking fuel?" Does it recover if you bump the throttle? Thanks. Capability Range: Advanced As long as you're that far into the pipe (to prevent reversion from feeding air back into the O2 sensor) then I wouldn't worry just now about changing the settings. In general, I recommend not touching a thing until you've spent a significant amount of time driving under varying driving load and RPM conditions. Am i doing the right thing? And the less correction you do until you understand that---the better! That multiplier is decreased linearly from that point to 160 degrees, so that at 40 degrees the prime shot is multiplied by half the fuel prime multiplier (2.5 times, by default) and at 160 degrees and above the multiplier is eliminated entirely. Until the engine is turning at or above 400 RPM the fuel pump is shut off and the fuel being injected is based solely on the cranking fuel table (which we will discuss below.) Any help with this would be greatly appreciated.Gary. I am guessing you have some sort of current loop going on. Bolt-on carburetor style EFI for your classic car or truck. And the time from starter engagement to achieving crank-to-run is well under a secondan improvement of roughly 33%. Price Point: $$$. Thank you for your insight! Everyone raving about customer service is telling the truth! Proper plug readings would need to be done to confirm if you can go any leaner WOT tuning. Thanks. Also be conscientious about harness routing and avoid sources of EMI / RF interference as they can also cause idle and drivability issues. Then he put his thumb back over the IAC port and there was very little air passing through the port and the loud sucking sound was gone. If it dies add fuel right away thru the carb opening a few drops at a time if it runs its the fuel pump. (Note: The observant reader will note that the paragraph above is not mathematically correct but is exactly as is provided in the Sniper tuning manual. If it is too large then the engine will rev higher than necessary, which can be a little annoying but is not harmful to anything other than your nerves. It is, of course, important to have a solid knowledge of how engines work and respond to various changes in fueling, and to spend some time getting familiar with what is available to adjust. Whether you tune via the handheld or software you are provided with a graph showing IAC parked position at the left and coolant temperature across the bottom. "I've edited the article with a note about the difference. If that works then try halving them again. Does pressing the throttle slightly allow the engine to start. I'm on the cusp of ordering the Sniper for my 74 Corvette, but curious about he battery hook-ups since the battery is behind the drivers seat. Best Overall. Beyond that you can turn your cranking fuel down. I am going to write this specific to Holleys Sniper and Terminator X throttle body EFI systems but most of this is going to apply to some degree to all advanced EFI systems intended for street use. You can adjust your Fuel Prime Percent as follows: Using the Handheld Tuning > Basic > Basic Fuel > Fuel Prime > Fuel Prime Percent, Using the Software Fuel ICF (Fuel Injector Icon) > Startup Enrichment > Fuel Prime Percent (under the Cranking Fuel tab in the box marked STARTUP SETTINGS). Avoid using any 90 degree fittings between the tank and pump. I have been looking at all efi units and I keep coming back to the Sniper. transmission control and more. Love the example at the end. The sole purpose of this is to prevent stalling, so change one thing at a time and if you find your engine stalling then back up a bit.The four key settings:1.) I know it's only 2 feet but ever inch counts. Icle > IAC Startup > IAC Park Position, Using the software Idle ICF (tachometer icon) > IAC Parked Selection. ), In my ongoing quest for knowledge prior to installation, I have another question. It is also coming through the idle air port. This is a huge improvement over what we got initially. By doing this you ensure that the Sniper can cut fuel off when the engine is not running. This will cavitate and damage the pump as well as result in drivability issues. Stay up to date with the latest releases, events, promotions and more. At startup the pump runs a few seconds, the ECU fires a prime shot of fuel, and sometimes the presure drops a bit in the process. Oxygen sensors read unburnt Oxygen not Fuel. If you're installing a Sniper EFI system and almost ready to crank it over for the first time, this is the video for you! You'll note that the pressure drops at that point. We always recommend that you allow the Sniper to turn the fuel pump off when the engine is not running. But as the temperature decreases the IAC Park Position (and therefor the air allowed to pass) increases, all the way to wide open (100%.). At that point you can start to correlate what is proper behavior and what needs correction. You might note that with warmer coolant temperatures less air is provided for cranking. Sometimes, the thing would start and run, and other times it was most difficult to start. Like many others, EFI System Pro allowed me to dial a new Holley Sniper. Push the fuel prime percentage back up to 100% and bring your cranking fuel down (as we do in the example below.). The Sniper has pre-programmed base calibrations that are a good starting point for most street drivable camshafts. Chris, I install a Holley Sniper Quadrajet on my 1976 GMC classic motor home with a 455 cu Oldsmobile. Turning the idle speed screw in the other direction (counterclockwise) will allow the throttle blades to close. Back to holley.com . Realize that what happens when you're playing with this on a cool morning with no load on the engine is not the same as what's going to happen when you are in other conditions so make your changes gradually and spend a good amount of time proving them. If you free dumped it in the top, it will aerate and foam up the fuel. Price Point: $$, Robust, feature-rich You also need to properly phase the rotor. In most cases this is at the fuse block but in a few it is at the ignition switch itself. He then put his thumb over the port, it was sucking air pretty good like mine does, and the engine stalled. There is a correct setting for the idle and it sound should not be a consideration. Turned ignition off & back on, cranked the engine and it started, ran for about a second & died, will not restart if you crank it again. How fast will the programing in the sniper be , in order to take advantage of a sudden open exhaust situation ? Great article. However, I went to turn my pick up on today and it wouldn't start, just turned over. You have that where you want it. sniper Installation If you're installing a Sniper EFI system and almost ready to crank it over for the first time, this is the video for you! It drains the battery almost dead then will fire up. Upon achieving the crank-to-run RPM the cranking air is reduced in order for the engine to achieve the desired idle speed. Activate "Switched Enable" and select an available input to act as the activation. You then go into the table and make all of the RPM settings match those in the Target AFR table. But let me elaborate a bit. And 10 micron filter between the pump and throttle body. The Ordering process was so easy and non-painful. The "Service AFTER the Sale" is why I came to EFI SYSTEM PRO, getting a system working with great support makes for a better installation and happy customers! to the same number as 4.) Maybe Holley will add Fuel Prime Multiplier to Terminator X later. If it dies again after this it must be a bad coil. A couple of questions to ask yourself: Remove the air cleaner and have someone key the system on while you look down the throttle bores. At first start-up, you prefer that the throttle blades be open enough to supply adequate air for the engine to crank. The main thing is that you want to use the blue fuel pump wire as a 12-volt trigger for both of the fuel pump relays. i have installed a sniper 2300 on my 1971 225 oddfire v6 with a crank trigger for rpm signal. Is the fuel pressure correct? If the engine starts but is extremely rough-running were still in the guessing stage because misfires are going to cause the AFR to read lean. Hi, I have a 1987 Firebird with 305 engine and Quadrajet carb. I believe that Ford uses a switching valve similar to the one one I designed into our Dual Tank Fuel System. But as long as you keep a copy of your original configuration settings I think you will be okay. The resulting resistance can burn up fuel pumps, wiring and relays. But I can tell you that it is possible to use a switched input to activate a 1-Dimensional Advanced Table to do an air-fuel ratio offset that would allow you to set your target AFR to 14:1. Super helpful and knowledgeable. Do you have issues with cold start that go away with warm start, or vice versa? At the bottom you'll see AE vs TPS RoC Blanking. My car is going on the dyno for final tuning next week. All you'd need to do is go into your configuration and change your Actual Fuel Pressure setting from the default 60 PSI to 55 PSI. injection systems capable of Not all 12 volt switched sources in the fuse block of a 55 year old car do this! Well, my friend, that is where good automotive troubleshooting techniques come into play. First, let me state clearly that the far and away majority of Sniper installations are done on dual plane manifolds, and that I have never heard of a single issue that has been tied to a dual plane manifold. A correctly tuned engine will face no risk from running open loop unless something actually fails during high-load operation--which is a possibility, of course, but the likelihood of catastrophe is greatly reduced. Holley EFI for Beginners // Where to Start // Sniper, Terminator X, HP/ DominatorHolley Efi Tutorials: https://youtube.com/playlist?list=PLN6EQoVPwAwHzmhEknk. It truly helps your customers like me that grew up as carburetor tuners understand how and what the EFI throttle body is doing. Not some generic piece as some have speculated. Cranking fuel lets us compensate for that drop in pressure. This is the crank-to-run RPM. Pin 85: To Ground Yes, all warranty replacement and repair claims must be handled through the retailer from which you purchased the unit. Thanks in advance. Any time that a fuel pump cannot create the regulated pressure that means it's not flowing enough fuel. Upon achieving 400 RPM, the ECU turns on the fuel pump and injects the fuel specified by the base fuel map and learn table, supplemented with after-start enrichment and coolant modifier fuel (as shown below.). Engines require three things to run. Nor can I really recommend that you split it as I have. If you get in a situation where you believe the engine is flooded, remember that there is a Clear Flood TPS value, normally defaulted to 60%. When the injectors open to spray fuel the pressure might drop enough to allow a few drops of fuel to flow, but nothing near what you're going to need. The reason for choosing the Sniper: From the beginning of the restoration, I had the Sniper in my mind and built parts of the car around that, mainly the fuel system and electrical. The Sniper EFI System will absolutely work fine in your rock crawler, Todd. Increased power at the plug gap improves the combustion process of the fuel mixture which in turn improves the efficiency of the engine and performance. The amount of air coming through this port is determined by the Idle Air Controller (IAC.) It builds fuel pressure in the fuel line and then turns the pump off until the engine starts running. Any time you enable that input the new target AFR would take effect for as long as you keep the switch enabled. Starts & immediately dies. multi-port EFI systems I am in the middle of plumbing my new sniper throttle body system. You can run resistor or non resistor plugs with the 6AL box. Feed pressure should be knocking on 58 PSI and the return should ideally be zero, if the feed pressure is not correct, or if the return line pressure is greater than 4-5 PSI find and correct the restriction before proceeding. Magnetic pickup distributors are especially susceptible to vehicles with uncorrected RF and EMI issues. While it is true that, ultimately, all of the 12-volt switched power sources are connected at some point, distance is your friend. How do you set this up?Thanks! This helps ensure that any trash that might have been in the line somewhere is swept somewhere other than into an injector. I have purchased two sniper EFI with the MSD distributor kit. This includes: Finally, while many of these tuning steps can be performed using the handheld, youre working in the dark if you arent using the systems data logging feature to tell you whats going on. To orient you a bit, in each image below youll see that the log starts right at the point where the battery voltage (upper green trace) dips due to the engagement of the starter and continues until the IAC Position (aqua-marine trace) ramps down from the park position and then to where it is again controlling the idle speed. Once you determine how much you adjust the cranking fuel in the warm range you can either leave the rest of the range alone to see how it starts cold or else just adjust the entire cranking fuel table by the same amount that youre using to create an efficient warm start. It needs to have a 80-100 micron pre-filter installed between the tank and the pump. idles good, runs amazing. Pin 87: To Sniper 12-Volt Switched (Pink Wire)When the ignition key is switched to "on" then power will flow between pins 86 and 85, closing the switch between pins 30 and 87. Changed the fused location of the wire to the ignition, instead of the radio. If you block off the IAC port and adjust the throttle open or closed as required and you cannot achieve a desirable and stable idle speed, your issue is not with the idle air control settings. #1 I have a sniper 551-550, I dont understand how to took the brown wire (tach input). For the Sniper it is best to run resistor plugs. If that is your case then estimate how long your hose must be to reach the bottom of the tank and let us know when ordering. and set 3.) Chris is my go to for any issues that arise with my sniper. Fortunately, Holley has another product that can solve that: Hydramat.. Hydramat is not inexpensive but you won't believe what it can do. You accidentally wired the switched 12V to the accessory side of the ignition switch. From what I read it should not be installed vertically? One thing I miss is the instant drop in rpms that my 650DP had. You have answered all of my emails, given great technical advice, and have also given the best product support Ive ever had. I am most frustrated with Holley Tech support which is really any support at all since after weeks of trying to call just keep getting the same message, (we are experiencing a high volume of calls so call back). O2 Sensor Mounting: The O2 needs to be mounted 6-8 after the merge in the header collector.Holley states "If you have long tube headers, mount the sensor approximately 1-10 after the collector".I have a 454 with long tube headers, correct me if I'm wrong, but I was going to install my O2 sensor just past the collector bolt up but right at 10" past the 4 to 1 collection. Capability Range: Advanced Not bad but maybe we can improve that. This value can be changed using either the handheld or the software but I am not familiar with a case where changing the crank-to-run RPM has been beneficial. Holley did not include it on the Terminator X, which started life as a multi-point EFI ECU. We can adjust that with the after-Start enrichmentIll bump that up a bit. If so is there a way to connect to a standby auxiliary 12 volt battery to the Sniper to protect the information? Many thanks,Louis. I have a datalog. :-). Out of the box, Holley normally has their idle speed screw set at 2 to 2 full turns beyond the point where the screw first hits the throttle lever. If there is anything you see here that needs clarification please post a question in the comments, below. Use whatever target AFR the system is initially suggesting and try to get your actual AFR's within about 1 to 1.5 of that value. Seems like thats what its doing. Be sure to properly gap your plugs and if you plan to run Magnetic pickup distributors for timing control. Hello, I have a relatively restrictive 2 " exhaust after the headers, due to the through frame exhaust situation. (You DO have a fuel pressure gauge installed, right? Directly to the BATTERY!!! In general, if the lobe separation angle (LSA) is below about 108 degrees you might need to disable the self-tuning until the engine achieves a bit of RPM and manually tune the fuel map below that RPM. Figure out what it's not getting and the find out why. Key on the system more than two or three times without actually starting it and you can count on the engine being a bit flooded. Thanks for your help system is working great! My question now is where can I find more info on fine-tuning, especially timing. So, yea it gonna ALWAYS be hard to start!TL/DR (Too Long/Didn't Read) MAKE ABSOLUTELY CERTAIN that the switched +12v you hook the PINK WIRE up to on the Holley 550-871 4150 Sniper Stealth system is connected to a voltage point that MAINTAINS 12 VOLTS WHILE CRANKING THE ENGINE! Enjoy! Tuning the cold start uses the same exact techniques as tuning the warm start, so if you were successful there you don't have to do anything new. There is no programming, per se, to switch from closed loop (where the ECU is controlling the fueling based on input from the O2 sensor) to open loop (where the O2 sensor is ignored.) Price Point: $$, Robust, feature-rich multi-port EFI systems offer easy plug-and-play late-model V8 engine swaps. Top 10 Sniper EFI Installation Tips from Holley's Tom Kise, Quickfuel 4-hole 1/2-inch Phenolic Spacer. Do as I Holley says? If so then it is (regardless of what the O2 sensor says.). Capability Range: Advanced While it may sound odd its not a defect and will not cause any drivebility issues. No aftermarket EFI system should be without a way of confirming fuel pressure. Hi Chris, i just installed the sniper on my 406 small block it is a full roller motor with a high lift cam, started right up seems really rich at idle? That's where I would start. My question is if both of my fuel pumps are wired from relays to my rocker panel where does the blue fuel pump prime wire connect or would you just not use it altogether. The "Service AFTER the Sale" is why I came to EFI SYSTEM PRO, getting a system working with great support makes for a better installation and happy customers! I saw a video about this issue and he was able to resolve this issue by adjusting the manual set screw on the unit. Thanks for the kind words, Tony. It connects the Sniper switched power to a very "dirty" power source. Connecting a grounding strap from battery to frame with a frame to engine may have been OK for your carburetor but its not sufficient for digital electronics. Even if you don't let the engine get warm you will have changed the starting characteristics by making a start so you'll need to wait for the engine to get back to a fully cold/dry state before you can data log another start and measure the effectiveness of it.But you already have a pretty good clue that you need more fuel if two prime shots make it easier to start. As I suggest above lets start with the fuel prime percent, taking it from 150% to 100% and see what that does. Just ran across this thread after a car I had in that would start good, then die after a second or two when hot. Activate Advanced Tables2. Hey Chris, I installed a Holley sniper on a small block 400, first start was great! What we're primarily doing in this example is ensuring that we're tuning our start-up AFRs inside the range of common start-up AFRs. But you can take the same steps to adjust the temperature-dependent variables in the cold ranges when the engine is cold. Is one barrel not spraying at all? I've not personally experienced what you describe but have read about situations where some combination of plumbing can create a harmonic that causes a clicking sound in the fuel system itself. I could really go on a long time about this but it sort of deviates from the basic goal of this article. Where do I start looking for the solution? Price Point: $, Advanced throttle body injection systems capable of transmission control and more. Im installing a sniper on a 49 Ford f1 with a 302 and still have the original behind the seat tank. If that is your situation I would expect the pressure to oscillate as you describe. Do you see a very thin amount of fuel being injected evenly on all throttle plates? Can I get ready made tunes?Even with this problem it is by far the best fuel system I have owned. Ill check the coil and see if anything else is attached. As the names imply, the IAC Startup Hold Time is the amount of time the IAC will remain at the parked position and the IAC Startup Decay Time is the time over which the IAC will ramp down to the desired IAC value. For this I recommend the HyperSpark Distributor. FE 390 that currently has a Pertronix distributor with the Ignitor 2 module. Extending wires with too small of a wire gauge will also result in the same damage. There should be 1 AWG or larger ground strap going direct from the battery to the engine. I really want to go EFI this year. Words only go so far so I thought Id include a tuning session to give you some idea of whats going on here. How will this setup work? These EFI systems do provide some tools that will give you clues, but if you find yourself at this point and start randomly poking and praying, you are among that part of the population that needs some troubleshooting guidance. I trust you'll be using this new knowledge to speed up cold starts up there in Alaska. More on that later. That is not the case. You mentioned its use in # 9 of the top 10 Sniper EFI installation tips. So try cutting both of those numbers in half and see what happens. Unfortunately, I know NOTHING about throttle stops. Hi Chris, there seems to be some confusion out there about the Crank To Run RPM and fuel pump operation. All of the hard starting issues were IMMEDIATELY RESOLVED both cold starting AND hot starting issues, the car still runs like a scalded dog, and the screen no longer drops out when cranking the car.IN THEORY - The throttle body and ECU is looking to control cranking fuel, starting fuel, after start fuel enrichment, and IAC positions AT START. Try cranking immediately upon key-on--before it has a chance to prime. Thanks. Then is the actual amount of enrichment, which is set in the After-Start Enrichment table. There must be an option that has been found to work. . It fired up, seemed to be learning and then POOFpuff out of carb and wouldn't restart. Getting the engine running was never a problem. Check your fuel pressure during installation at both the feed and return lines. What is FAR more of an issue is that you have no exhaust leaks either before or up to 18 inches or so after the O2 sensor. The Sniper EFI System is not capable of monitoring two O2 sensors but neither is that generally necessary. Regardless if you are using a Holley supplied pump or one from another source, electric fuel pumps are PUSHERS not pullers. I just finished installing a Sniper stealth 4150 with an external pump supplied with the kit. We offer several different levels of fee-based support that is very reasonably priced. Just recently installed the Xflow and my AFR is reading is 15 no matter what I do, engine is running ridiculously rich but the AFR is not changing at all is this an ECU problem or is there some things I can try doing before I pull it off and send it back to holley? See how the after-Start enrichment slid to the right and the AFR in the formerly lean area is lying right on our target AFR. He gave no details, is this an option and how would one go about this. That is pretty straight forward. Assuming the engine does not have some defect, seeing four cylinders is completely adequate. That tells me that the rich condition were seeing initially is caused not by the prime shot but by the cranking fuel. And the smell is just about gone. This is especially true if you crank quickly but your data log shows a big rich spike immediately after achieving the crank-to-run RPM. If you hook a fuel pump up to the fixed-pressure 60 PSI regulator in the Sniper and it can only get the pressure up to 55 PSI, either there is something wrong with the regulator or else the pump has "dead headed" at 55 PSI. Have you ever watched a post nuclear apocalypse movie? The Sniper ships with an OEM grade Bosch O2 sensor. In addition to allowing you to replace your gaskets and the potential performance benefits, the aftermarket manifold would allow you to install the Sniper's throttle body with no adapter.
